Summary: Viktor catches Hermione attempting some holiday baking.
Warnings: None

The knock on her door startled Hermione out of her daydreaming, as well as her off-key singing along to the wireless. Wiping her hands on a stray dishtowel, she pushed her hair back from her face and went to the front door.

She was surprised to find Viktor standing there, and she mentally cursed the holes in her jeans and the natty jumper she was wearing with the frayed elbows. She hadn’t been expecting him.

He smiled as if she were dressed in her best robes, though, reaching out to brush her cheek. “You haff flour,” he said, his grin lopsided and a bit sheepish, knowing she hated surprises.

Hermione scrubbed her cheeks roughly with the palms of her hand, a tiny laugh escaping. “I’ve been attempting to bake these cookies my mum used to make at Christmas – the first batch accidentally burnt, and I forgot the baking powder in the second,” she rambled for a moment, before the cold breeze made her realize he was still standing at her front door.

“Oh, come in Viktor, I’m sorry. Was there something you needed?”

He shook his head, and shrugged his shoulders. “I’ll help you vith these cookies,” he replied, side-stepping her question. He slipped his coat off and onto the couch and rolled up his sleeves as he made his way to the kitchen, ignoring Hermione’s protests.

Hermione followed him into the kitchen, in a bit of a huff. “I don’t need help, Viktor.”

He shrugged again, and gave her that lopsided grin that made her heart flip in her chest. “But I vant to help.”

She sighed and nudged him further into the kitchen with her hip, grinning as the song on the wireless changed to one of her favorite Christmas standards. I’ll Be Home For Christmas. “Fine. Could you chop the walnuts, then?”

They worked in tandem, Hermione mixing the dry ingredients precisely as Viktor chopped the walnuts. She hadn’t even realized she started singing along to the song until she caught Viktor watching her with amusement.

“Sorry, I know I’m horrible,” she said in embarrassment.

“No, no, you haff fine voice,” Viktor replied. “You like Christmas much, no?”

Hermione smiled. “Yes, I do like Christmas quite a bit.” She paused, hearing some unknown singer croon, “I’ll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams…

“Are you going back home to Bulgaria for the holidays?” she asked.

Viktor looked down at the nuts he was chopping, seeming to study the pieces before looking at her. “I am home for Christmas, Hermione,” he said seriously, barely stumbling over her name.

“Oh,” Hermione said dumbly, before grinning. “Oh.”

She studied her dry items intently, making sure she had everything in the bowl before she began to add her eggs and butter. “I’m sure you’ll have a merry Christmas,” she said, smiling a bit, as she glanced at him out of the corner of her eye.

“I am sure I vill,” Viktor replied, eyes serious, but smiling.
